"One in the morning and one in the afternoon. I have injected mobilization agents for four days. I will be able to donate bone marrow tomorrow. "
When a hundred thousand chance hit him, the fourth stick of a love relay race started. Affected by the donation of Huang Wenhuan, a senior student at HCBU, Wang Yukun, an undergraduate student of class 2017 donated precious hematopoietic stem cells to bring hope for others.
On November 30, the blood withdrawal room was full of colorful paper cranes and flowers. The machine started, and the blood was collected from the arm for extracorporeal circulation. After being separated by the machine, the blood was transported back to his body, while the separated hematopoietic stem cells would rush to another person.
The leaders of Beihang University and HCBU, as well as his closest classmates, came to accompany him through this special period. Cheng Bo, Deputy Party Secretary of Beihang University, visited him and said that "Goodman, you’ve been suffering these days! This kind of strong and fraternal quality in you is very valuable. Bone marrow donation is a matter worthy of pride all your life. I hope that more Beihang students can join the team of charity. "
Cheng Bo, Deputy Party Secretary of Beihang University, Ma Xiaolong, Vice President of the Red Cross Society of Beijing, Li Jinmin, Deputy Director of Huayuan Road District Office, HCBU leaders and students visited Wang Yukun.
The donation process was not smooth. Bone marrow donation adopts a double-blind system. In principle, the donor does not know the patient's condition, but Wang Yukun's donor is more than 1.8 meters tall, so the demand for hematopoietic stem cells is relatively large. At the end of the blood collection, doctors identified that the number of hematopoietic stem cells isolated was insufficient - so they had to collect them again the next day. Hearing the news, everyone present was surprised and distressed. Only Wang Yukun waved his hand and said, "come back tomorrow. It's OK." The next day, Wang Yukun, who took blood twice, finally ended his donation of hematopoietic stem cells. The staff of the Beijing Red Cross Society was moved to say, "you have given them hope of rebirth to the patients, and your good deeds have carried forward the Red Cross spirit of humanity, fraternity, and dedication."
Indeed, the seed of donating hematopoietic stem cells was buried in Wang Yukun’s mind two years ago. On October 12, 2018, Huang Wenhuan, HCBU undergraduate student of class 2016, donated hematopoietic stem cells. Wang Yukun was very moved to learn the story and took the initiative to consult relevant issues of donation through the Red Cross group chat. Many enthusiastic schoolmates introduced the channel of inputting blood samples. The blood samples in the warehouse have the chance to match the patients. The most convenient way to store them is to keep the samples when donating blood.
Wang Yukun also encountered a brief interlude when the blood sample was put into storage. The blood donation was on the same day as the school marathon relay race. The competition has been signed up and can't be easily withdrawn, and the donation cannot be missed as well, "because I want to put it in the warehouse earlier, one day earlier may save a patient, and one day later, the patient may miss it forever." Wang Yukun said. So he first donated blood on the same day, handled the storage of hematopoietic stem cells, and then immediately went to participate in the relay race. In retrospect, the memory of that day was still fresh in his mind. "Don’t intimate me" He said with a smile.

Less than one percent of the blood samples that have been put into the storage has been successfully matched. After more than a year of waiting, the Red Cross and the Chinese Bone Marrow Bank came to the news: matching success!
"My first reaction was surprise because the probability of successful matching was very low. I felt very lucky. The staff of the Beijing Red Cross Society and China Bone Marrow Bank called and asked me if I would like to donate, and I agreed without hesitation. " After the initial matching, fine physical examination and high-resolution blood sample detection should be carried out. All the ten indexes were successfully matched. When the patient’s condition was relatively stable, it would be the right time. "I'm not nervous, and I don't have any hesitation and worry. I've learned the relevant information that bone marrow donation does not cause risks and harm to the human body. But for the other side, the unknown patient, who is really in danger of life. "
After receiving the news of donation in July this year, Wang Yukun began to control his diet and strengthen his exercise. Hematopoietic stem cell donation still has certain requirements for physical fitness. To prevent fainting when donating, he consciously ate some healthy food and did exercises with the fitness videos on the Internet. After the term started, he often went running on the playground and did some fitness without equipment in the dormitory. These habits have been kept since he received the news.
Mobilization agent is a drug produced by gene recombination technology, which is used to promote the growth of hematopoietic stem cells and release them into the peripheral blood. During the donation, the whole blood is collected by vein, and hematopoietic stem cells are extracted by blood cell separator, and other blood components are returned to donors.
By the end of November, Wang Yukun went into the hospital to prepare for the coming donation. He stayed alone in a hotel arranged for him by the Red Cross for four days without his parents' company for mobilization agent injection. Asked about his family, he said that his parents respected his decision, but he didn't want his parents to worry about him, so he didn't let them come. "It's not a big deal, I can handle it myself."
Wang Meng, HCBU counselor of class 2017, told reporters, "after the injection of mobilization agent, he suffered from waist soreness and flu-like symptoms, but he never shakes his resolution to donate. He always told us "don’t worry" and "much better". When the doctor said that he could have some anti-cold medicine, he said, "medicine has side effects, I can still bear it."
When asked if he had ever wavered, Wang Yukun scratched his head and said with embarrassment, "to tell you the truth, I have never worried about my body. The only time I wavered was when I considered the postgraduate entrance examination. If I want to take the postgraduate entrance examination, my study schedule will be greatly affected. But I quickly ruled out the idea that the postgraduate entrance examination would not fail because of donation these days, but the patient might not survive if I give up the donation. I can't just sit by and ignore life for the sake of these days' time and energy. What I didn't expect was that I was very lucky to get a postgraduate recommendation later. " Wang Yukun smiled, "A good heart conquers ill-fortune. "
This donation of hematopoietic stem cells was Wang Yukun's third blood donation. In addition to actively participating in blood donation, he also joined volunteer activities for 400 hours. Wang Yukun believed that the volunteer system of Beihang University has had a significant impact on him. The requirement of more than 10 hours of volunteer time per semester seemed simple, but this semi-compulsory system gave him the motivation to participate in volunteer activities. "At the beginning, I may only want to finish the task, but as time goes by, I enjoy volunteering. Why not spend a little time improving your knowledge and help others? " Wang Yukun said.

He also worked as a teaching assistant, helping teachers to correct homework and test papers, and answering questions for students online and offline. On weekdays, he enthusiastically provided peer counseling for younger students and gave them a lot of advice on study and life. He said that he used to get a lot of help from seniors and sisters, and now he wanted to pass on this kind of help.
"I'm used to giving, and I don't want to get anything in return. The biggest harvest of doing these things may be the happiness I’ve got”, Wang Yukun said.
Wang Yukun has made great achievements in his studies and scientific research. He has won the first prize of the National University Robot Competition, the first prize of the National University Robot Competition Equestrian Simulation Competition, the third prize of Fengru Cup Science and Technology Competitions (two events), the first prize of Fengru Cup Innovation Competition, and so on.

As a Communist Party member, the purpose of "serving the people wholeheartedly" is the important reason why he decided to join the Party. Wang Yukun said, "I want to work with my predecessors to respond to the call of the state and to take the lead when the society needs us. Although only one patient was saved this time, I hope to play a leading and exemplary role as a Party member in the school. " During the battle against Covid-19, Wang Yukun was one of the 100% members of the staff and students of HCBU.
Wang Yukun in Daily Life
There were not many classmates and friends who know that Wang Yukun was going to donate bone marrow. He is introverted and low-key. He didn't tell too many people about it in advance. "Donation is a small matter for me, but it's also necessary to tell my own story because I want to drive more people to know what bone marrow donation is all about. From the social point of view, there are too few cases of bone marrow donation. We need positive guidance to let more people participate in it. " This may be a rare high-profile moment for the low-key Wang Yukun.
Certificates and Flowers that Wang Yukun Received
On the morning of December 3, Wang Yukun returned to school healthily
In 2005, Zhou Yu, an undergraduate student of class 2020 from the school of mechanical engineering and automation, became the first hematopoietic stem cell donor at Beihang University. Since 2018, Wang Yukun has been the fourth case of bone marrow donation in Beihang University and the second case in HCBU. Before Wang Yukun’s donation, He Cai, an undergraduate of Medical College, Huang Wenhuan, an undergraduate of HCBU, and Ge Yifan, a graduate student of Power College made donations as well. They complete the transmission of great love and inherit the spirit of “patriotic dedication and daring to be the first”.
Their dedication makes the life of strangers rejuvenate, affecting more and more young students. Let this relay race continue to pass on the energy of life. That is what we called Beihang style!
